Britney Spears’ family has been hiding a secret heartache. The pop-wreck’s grandmother committed suicide at the age of 31.
Emma Jean Spears killed herself during a bout of severe depression in June 1966 in her hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana.
The details have emerged as Britney herself struggles with depression amid a tug-of-love court battle over the custody of her two young sons.
According to reports in the US this week, her grandma blasted herself once in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun at the grave of her baby son who had died eight years earlier. She had apparently taken off her shoe, pressed the weapon against her chest and pulled the trigger with a toe from her right foot.
The mum-of-four had positioned herself so that one of her legs was across the grave of the baby, who lost his life after living for just three days. At the time, the coroner reported that she had attempted to kill herself on three other occasions.

The order was made after ex-husband Kevin Federline officially told the judge that Spears ran a red light with the boys in the car the week before last. He currently has temporary custody of their children.
